This story was circulated back in the early days about some of the ghosts related to the shootings of Charles Whitman. The ghost stories have included where his mother lived and was murdered. The people who lost their lives around the campus grounds. The people who died in the tower and his wife. In this story, they attribute the haunting of this particular house to be that of Whitman’s mother in fact, the mother died in a high-rise apartment that directly faced the UT Tower. This story is about the house he lived in with his wife when he murdered her.
This haunting takes place in Austin, Texas. It was told to me by a close friend. We will call her Sarah. Sarah had started seeing an artist who lived on the south side of town. The house was on a quiet street in a middle class neighborhood.
Sarah always had a strange feeling when she went into the house.
A feeling of fear. Many of the artist’s friends refused to go into the house. Sarah would never stay there alone, but she would spend the night with her boyfriend. Each time she spent the night in the house, she would have the same nightmare.
In the nightmare, she would be in the master bedroom of the house. The bed in the room was pushed up fairly close to the window. In the dream, the window was slightly open. Through the opening in the window, a shotgun would appear. The shotgun would scan the room, and Sarah would wake up in a cold sweat.
Sarah related this story to her boyfriend. He said that he had had the same dream many times. The artist then told her the story of the time a friend of his had called someone locally to come and investigate the house for evidence of an any ghostly activity.
The medium came into the house and was struck by a sense of dread.
She said that there was much hate in the house. She also added that someone had been violently murdered there. Attempts were made to free whatever spirit or spirits were in the house, but they proved unsuccessful.
Sarah was very upset by this story, and she questioned her boyfriend about why he had not told her earlier. He said that he did not want to upset her. Sarah and her boyfriend decided to try and find out what happened in the house. The next door neighbor lived there a long time, but was old and did not come out of the house much. Sarah decided to go and talk to the lady anyway. Mrs Smith was all too happy to fill her in. She was also surprised that they did not know what happened in that house. The neighbor told her that back in the 1960s, a man killed his mother in that house before going on a shooting spree on top of the tower of the University of Texas. His name was Charles Whitman. Sarah never set foot in the house again.
