Weird Austin History The Pig Lady

Again, another article from Weird Texas Magazine a novelty that was published in 2001 in Austin Texas.

If you look at her business card, you’ll see a pig’s butt. If you look at her car, you’ll see several pigs butts. Why is this lady such a ham about pigs? Because she happens to share her life with a ham of a pig.

Her name is Aralyn, the pig’s name is Babe, and together they make quite an interesting pair. Aralyn first met Babe at a silent auction, she was the only bidder. Now you can find them living side by side in, except for size, exact replica homes. The houses are painted bright blue and brilliant colors on the inside with no white walls. Babe’s house includes an air conditioner for the Texas heat, No bacon wanted here. Babe also cools down in a wading pool, nibbling on grapes while being grumpy and cynical.

Co-worker David Newton adds to his description of Aralyn, saying that she’s generous and warm. Sounds quite different from a pig, and yet the two get along splendidly. There are times when one of them wears a costume, but I think you can still tell which one is the pig.

When David started working with the Pig and the Pig Lady, Babe literally rolled out the red carpet. Just one of many of the pig’s talents. Aralyn also has a snout for talent. Seeing her home and her car is enough to reveal that she is an artist. She has written several plays, one of which had a run at Kennedy Center. Aaron has never had children, by choice. She feels that you can’t do everything and do it all well. She opted not to have children to focus on her career and her art. Aralyn also served on the board of Planned Parenthood. She believes that birth control should be free and available to everyone who wants it.

Now how did she get into pigs? Aralyn’s mother grew up on a pig farm. Maybe it’s in her blood, pigs were always her favorite animal. Aralyn has a brother who is an engineering professor at Virginia Tech, but when she was born, her mother told her father, “This one isn’t going to be like the other one.”

Aralyn greets her clients in a piggy red Lexus with matching piggy red cell phone. The Lexus has custom made pink pig floormats. Her other car, is decorated with pigs. Arilyn and Babe were proud when the pig car was selected for the Houston Art Car Parade. However, Babe was unable to attend.

When asked about pigs as pets, Arilyn wisely replies. If you know how dogs behave, and get a cat expecting it to behave like a dog, you’ll be surprised. Same with pigs. They don’t act like any other animal. They are more interesting to watch than most animals. They are very independent and territorial. Babe does realize, though, that Aralyn is “the top pig”.

The two don’t keep around extra things that they don’t need.

Marilyn threw out her stove when she remodeled her home. She said she said she hadn’t used it in 15 years, so why should she bother designing around it, she also has no dryer and no stereo. Aralyn says she hears music almost everywhere anyway, but I think the pig may be missing out. Babe has also missed out on Arrowlyn’s extensive world travels. Thailand is her favorite place so far. Her next destination is Australia, under the mayor’s sister city program. So, though Babe missed out on some things, I’d say Babe has it made in the shade for a Texas pig.
