In Rosemary Ellen Gulley’s book The Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits she brings up something called Corpse Candles and Corpse Lights and uses references to them through Northern European legends and folklore. The belief was that they look like a lit candle, just the flame part and they appear around the time that there’s going to be a death.
Welsh, Irish, Scottish stories talk about these Corpses Lights. Many of the stories she brings up about experiences are references from a book written by Reverend Davis in a book that he wrote titled The Invisible World, in addition to a book written by Mr O’Donnell called Ghost-land. These references go back into the early 1900’s and they are very superstitious in nature. If the light of the flame is small a child will die, if it is large an adult will die, if there are many the number of those little candle lights will be the number of people who will die. They are close to the ground, above houses, and in the sky. So they’re everywhere.
It’s 2025 and I have seen thousands of Ghost Lights in real life, in pictures, and in videos. I’ve heard hundreds of stories of people who have seen every kind of light you can imagine, and they consider them to be related to someone who’s passed away. I have seen the blue orbs and the blue lights and the green lights and the red lights that are referred to in the folklore stories.
My experience has been that Ghost Lights are not necessarily related to death they can be related to Spirits but not related to death. I have seen death and I have not seen Corpse Lights. I’ve seen what they’re describing is Corpse Lights in haunted locations where there has been no death.
There are so many light phenomena related to the supernatural, the unexplainable and haunted houses. My experience does not reflect the experience of these long told old Tales from Europe.
She notes: ‘orbs appear to be a form of energy of Unknown Origin.’ I agree. I don’t agree that they don’t have sufficient mass to set off infrared motion detectors or detection meters or anything detected by motion. I have experienced them many many times as have we all who are interested in the ghost of this genre. On our recording devices, on our ring cameras, Orbs setting off our motion detection devices. The book was written before the current phenomenon of everyone having recording devices around our houses, in parking lots, department stores, and fast food chains. Cameras are everywhere picking up strange phenomena.
Oh, the changes in our world since when the book which was written her book was written and 1992.
