Indie Meme Film Festival, April 9-13 AFS Cinema. Austin’s own celebration of cinema from the Indian subcontinent welcomes a true innovator and boundary-pusher for its 10th anniversary with a special appearance by Anurag Kashyap. The writer/director has proved that being prolific doesn’t mean sacrificing artistic power, as shown by his latest film, super-stylish corrupt cop drama Kennedy. Not only will he fly in for a special live Q&A, but he’ll be sticking around for a special filmmaking workshop looking at how he has helped turn the Indian film industry upside down. However, that’s just a taste of the lineup for this essential festival, with dramas, shorts, and documentaries from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and across the global diaspora that will remind American audiences that there’s more to the region than Bollywood blockbusters. https://www.austinchronicle.com/events/film/special-screenings/indie-meme-film-festival-3251347/

Austin Texas Book Trail, April 12-13, Austin indie bookstores. Finally they’ve conceived a trail for indoor kids like me! This annual trek through Austin’s 29 local indie bookstores features more than just page-flipping fun – although that is a pretty big attraction. Starting Saturday morning with a coffee-cheersing at Mañana Dos, Bat City’s bookish crowd can navigate exclusive discounts, prizes, and activations at all their favorite literary havens: Alienated Majesty, Black Pearl Books, Lark & Owl Booksellers, even everyone’s favorite leftist hang-out Monkeywrench Books – plus many more. Events like this two-day trailblazer really do make a difference, as ATBT reports last year’s inaugural event had several bookstores gaining an additional $5,000-8,000 in sales that weekend. Close the book on the trail at Community Garden on Sunday with an evening afterparty – but don’t worry. Your literary love affair is to be continued. https://www.austinchronicle.com/events/arts/books/austin-texas-book-trail-3254084/
