Pioneer Ghost Tour, Sat., Aug. 2, Pioneer Farms (10621 Pioneer Farms Dr). Many people have passed since the pioneers, but it seems only old time-y folks get haunting rights. I’ve been on several of these tours, hoping to glimpse a ghastly bonnet or translucent waistcoat. It hasn’t happened for me yet, but I always leave with some delightfully dark historical fun facts and local lore that make it all worth it. That being said, the folks behind this tour have diligently documented disembodied voices and other oddities along their tour route and all but promise an encounter. This just might be the tour you can leave informed and afraid.www.pioneerfarms.org

RESCHEDULED FROM 7/8: Summer Hillside Concert Series, Tue., Aug. 5, 6pm, Pan Am Park. Austin’s longest-running free concert series is back! For the 67th year, Pan Am’s hillside stage welcomes families and community members to dance and revel in free music at the park. This year’s series kicks off with Seguin-based group Conjunto Cats, local Tex-Mex conjunto ensemble Grupo Cruzsante, and Tejano pop stars Daniel Lopez y Aventura, plus DJ Party Pete gets the party started. Every Tuesday through the rest of July promises a similarly packed lineup – get there early to get a good spot!
Hayes Carll (performance & record signing), Tue., Aug. 5, 5pm. Free (all ages). Waterloo Records. Following last year’s rollicking collaboration with the Band of Heathens, Hayes Carll’s new ninth LP rolls back with a more reflective tone. Not that We’re Only Human isn’t cut with Carll’s classic winking wit – take the rhyming of “Deloris” and “divorce” on “Progress of Man (Bitcoin & Cattle),” for instance – but the balladeer offers up contemplative philosophical musings and aphorisms on our modern condition with a ruminating and roughened vocal that hearkens Lyle Lovett’s playful wisdom. The album runs in search of what unites us as much as the absurdities that we’re all plodding through.
Book Swap, Tue., Aug. 5, Slackers Brewing Co. Are you going to read that? No, really. Are you? If it’s sat on your shelf for years, chances are it will sit there for many more. Put that sorry book out of its lonesome misery and trade it in for something you’ll actually pick up at Slackers’ Book Swap. Give those dusty pages a chance to see the light of someone else’s eyes. We won’t tell your mom or your cozy-historical-fiction-romance-loving friend and, let’s face it, they’ve given up hope that you’d read their gift long ago.
