The oldest bridge in San Angelo Texas is the Lone Wolf Bridge built in 1888. In the earliest of days it was the bridge was built where the Buffalo Hunters and the people at the Fort Concho military post traversed the south Conch River. In the 1870’s it became known at the Lone Wolf crossing and then bridge because of the large Buffalo Hunter encampment nearby named “Lone Wolf” by the Buffalo Hunters.
The encampment at some point became some what populated be on that southside of the Concho a town named Lone Wolf Texas was created long after all of the Buffalo had been killed.
Though Lone Wolf was at one time considered as a potential site for the county courthouse, one source indicates the town was never platted, there were no landowners, and most residents were probably squatters.
As the population grew the bridge was used for buggies, wagons and people until the automobile changed Texas travel forever. In 1922 it was rebuilt to accommodate the new transportation craze.
Many old bridges are believed to be haunted. The general culprit are hangings, drownings, suicide and accidents. The ghost stories around the Lone Wolf Bridge sound an awful lot like urban legend. One is that after the catastrophic flood of 1936 many bodies collected around the bridge but local historian Rick Smith puts an end to that theory in this article.
