Justin Harwood Brooks began his career within a Radio show in Dallas Texas at the age of 17-years. He would later become a journalist with the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
Novelist and journalist, he also married a journalist and together they had a unique relationship living in Fort Worth, Texas most of their lives.
Elston told a very interesting story, and it went like this: on October 5th, 1969, while driving his family to the State Fair in Dallas. He looked into the rearview mirror and saw a white Chevrolet traveling at highway speed, having a tire blowout. This caused the car to fishtail wildly. but it was also still driving 60 miles per hour. As this was happening, the cars around the White Chevrolet swerved so they did not hit the out-of-control car.
Horrifyingly the driver was thrown from the car when the driver’s door flew open, the car then drove over his body.
He did not stop and to go back to the horrible scene as there were four other family members in the car and he didn’t want any of them to see the horrible sight. He did though, see a police car on the side of the road and pulled over immediately. The police car was getting ready to drive off but stopped when they saw Elston. The police officer rolled down his window and said are you coming to tell me about the accident? Elston nodded and the police officer said he already knew, somebody had already stopped to let him know and he was on the way. The sirens were wailing as the police car drove off.
That night Elston could not get the horrible accident out of his mind. As a journalist with the Star-Telegram in Fort Worth he called his office to get more information, but he was shocked to discover they had no information about the tragic accident. So, he called the police department. and they told him there had been no accident recorded on file but they did have statements from four other people who had seen the driver being thrown from the white Chevrolet.
