The king of the Attacapa tribe had a beautiful daughter. Her name was KisselPoo. Because she was born when the moon was at its fullest, and the tribal leaders believed she would be under the protection of the moon goddess.
When Kissel Pooh was 15 years old, tales of her beauty and charm spread throughout the land far and wide. Many young braves came to woo the beautiful girl. Her father and his tribal leader friends finally singled one man out to be her husband. They chose a man much older than Kisselpoo, but he was very powerful. He also had many other wives.
As is the power of youth, there was a young boy named Running Bear who believed his love was stronger than. The tribal leaders decision. He brought her gifts. He was young, he was handsome, he was romantic, he was athletic, and she fell in love with him immediately. Of course, she could not back out of her betrothal or go against the elderly chiefs. So plans for the marriage continued. As she was getting ready for the upcoming nuptials, she could hear Running Bear softly calling her name. He wanted her to run away with him. And she did. They ran to the nearby Big Lake where he had a canoe waiting. They jumped in and rowed into the lake. Because she was the most important person on her wedding day, she was quickly missed. And the couple was soon followed.

Kisselpoo’s father had had a dream where the moon goddess told him he should let the young girl be with the young man she loved. But the man who had been told she was his betrothal was quite angry and he had his medicine man call up the wrath of the gods. Soon a terrible storm came up, causing great waves to form upon the lake. The little canoe could not bear up under the turbulence and soon was turned over. Kissel poo and Running Bear were last seen being swept away in the turbulent waters.
KisselPoo was in fact being protected by the Goddess of the moon. And when she found out what happened, she called upon her kinsman, the Tropical Storm God, and created a furious hurricane, causing the waters of the lake to sweep over and destroy. The village of the Chosen husband? The lake became an ugly, eerie place to be around. It carried a curse. We’re talking about Lake Sabine, but. So at some point she lifted the curse. Because today there are lots of fish, beautiful water, fowl and native plants.
