The original gatherer of Texas ghost stories was Docia Schulz Williams. She passed away July 17, 2023. This is her obituary from The Bowie News:

 

September 12, 1930 – July 17, 2023
BOWIE – Docia Schultz Williams, 92, passed away on July 17, 2023 in Bowie.
A graveside service will be at a later date.
She was born Sept. 12, 1930 to John Fredrick Schultz and Statira Jim Thorton Schultz in St. Louis, MO. Docia was a 1951 graduate of the Texas State College for Women, now Texas Woman’s University, with a bachelor of science degree in merchandising.
She was well renowned by the tourism and hospitality industry in San Antonio, having received numerous awards for her contributions. An avid reader and student of history, she authored a number of books, including “ Spirits of San Antonio” and “The History and Mystery of the Menger Hotel.” Docia met and married DPS Lt. Roy D. Williams in 1984. When he retired in 1993, they became world travelers.
Docia is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy and her daughter, Sarah Southworth Thaxton.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Dennis Thaxton, Burke, VA; brother-in-law, Larry and wife Juanita Williams, Bowie and sisters-in-law, Maxine Higgs, Decatur, Linda Randles, Chandler, TX and Lynne Williams, Price, TX.
