According to a statement issued by Anna she placed the poison in cold coffee the children would drink when they came home from school. “They made trouble for me,” she said complaining. “They refused to do chores and wanting to just sit and drink coffee.”
This was the reason Annie Schulze-Hauptreif gave to the district attorney in Hays County for murdering four of her step children in 1924. Rather than being hung by the state, she hung herself in her cell.
